The 14th online edition of the NATO M&S Basic Course has started
The NATO Modelling and Simulation Centre of Excellence (NATO M&S COE) is conducting the 14th online edition of the NATO M&S Basic Course from 21–24 March 2023.
The NATO Joint Force Trainer Centre has accredited the course as “NATO-approved” and included it in the NATO Education and Training Opportunities Catalogue. The course is open to NATO and PfP nations and organisations. The objective of the course is to provide information on the use of modelling and simulation in the military context and to cover general topics related to M&S in the military environment.
The 2023 edition experienced an improvement in the delivery of course content, thanks in part to new collaborations with some of the most recognised NATO warfare headquarters, such as the Joint Warfare Centre, the Joint Force Training Centre, and Cyber COE. These headquarters present some unique use cases for the use of the main NATO simulators in various types of NATO joint exercises.
The online course proved again to be an exceptional opportunity to impart M&S knowledge to those seeking to improve their training on the subject. The use of the Education and Training portal and the Webex application proved to be very effective and enabled the delivery of high-quality content.
The course is attracting increasing interest worldwide with previous courses attracting more than 40 international participants from both the civilian and military sectors.
Col. Francesco Pacillo, the Director of the NATO M&S COE, expressed his satisfaction about the full attendance and his gratitude to the above-mentioned NATO training institutions that are enriching the content of the course. During his welcome speech he congratulated the students for their achievement and interest shown for understanding M&S in NATO. He also reiterated that “the online offering continues to prove very effective and can support the NATO education and training pillar. In particular, the M&S Basic Course allows students to become familiar with the basic concepts of M&S, the current state of its application in civilian and military environments, and provides some insights into future M&S developments such as the NATO Next Generation of M&S programme. The M&S Basic Course represents a milestone that can enhance students’ natural development of these innovative technologies as computational tools that help to design, build, test, and evaluate various systems and processes in a simulated environment”.

NATO Centres of Excellence are nationally or multi-nationally funded institutions accredited by NATO. They train and educate leaders and specialists from NATO member and partner countries, assist in doctrine development, identify lessons learned, improve interoperability and capabilities, and test and validate concepts through experimentation. They offer recognized expertise and experience that is of benefit to the Alliance and support the transformation of NATO, while avoiding the duplication of assets, resources and capabilities already present within the NATO command structure.
