International Engagement at the 16th NATO M&S Basic Course
Rome, February 2024 – The NATO Modelling & Simulation Centre of Excellence (NATO M&S COE) proudly hosted the 16th edition of the NATO M&S Basic Course, marking it as one of the most popular sessions to date with 24 international students in attendance. The course, renowned for its comprehensive curriculum, took a deeper dive into computer assisted wargaming, fostering a high level of interaction between lecturers and students.
Collaborative Learning Environment
The diverse group of students, hailing from various NATO member and partner countries, engaged in a dynamic learning environment. The course’s structure promoted active discussions and the exchange of ideas, enhancing the educational experience. The course was enriched by the participation of several esteemed institutions, including the Italian CESIVA, the NATO JWC, the NATO CCDCOE, and the universities of Genova and Tor Vergata, as well as Fabaris company.
Expert-Led Insights
A team of expert instructors led the course, providing insights into the latest trends and applications of Modelling & Simulation in the military context. Their hands-on approach allowed students to experience the practical aspects of M&S tools and methods.
Focus on Computer Assisted Wargaming
This session prioritized computer-assisted wargaming, a cornerstone of contemporary military strategy and decision-making. Students gained some insights into the nuances of simulation-based wargames, equipping themselves with indispensable skills for their future roles. This initial focus serves as a precursor to the forthcoming Computer Assisted Wargaming course, planned for late 2024 or early 2025, laying a robust foundation for participants to excel in this vital aspect of military simulation and strategy.
A Platform for Networking
Beyond the classroom, the course served as a platform for networking, enabling participants to build lasting connections within the M&S community. These relationships are essential for the collaborative nature of defence and security operations.
Deputy Director’s Comments
The Deputy Director of the NATO M&S COE underscored the importance of the course, stating, “This course allows about 50 students per year to start their journey in Modelling & Simulation. It’s a crucial stepping stone for those entering this field.” He further encouraged interested individuals to follow the NATO M&S COE website for updates on future courses and activities.

NATO Centres of Excellence are nationally or multi-nationally funded institutions accredited by NATO. They train and educate leaders and specialists from NATO member and partner countries, assist in doctrine development, identify lessons learned, improve interoperability and capabilities, and test and validate concepts through experimentation. They offer recognized expertise and experience that is of benefit to the Alliance and support the transformation of NATO, while avoiding the duplication of assets, resources and capabilities already present within the NATO command structure.
